faroe islands 12

Life has not always been easy on Suduroy. It is a very small society where everybody seems to be connected with everybody. I spoke with the former chief of police, Eiler, and learned a lot more about the structure of this society of fishermen and women. Although, women… there is an absolute shortage of women here on the islands.

My next meeting was with Elnar, a former customs officer and today responsible for the museum. Above the museum the Faroese flag was flying because one of the former inhabitants of Tvøroyri became 90 today. But I was even more surprised when he told me that he had never eaten any vegetables or fruit in his whole life. His diet is still as in the old days: bread, fish, meat, seabirds and potatoes.
