Research in Tokyo part 8:
I had to wake up at 4 o’clock this morning to be in time for the tuna auction at Tsukiji Central Fish Market. My main interest was to learn as much as possible about inspecting and testing fish.
It is hard to understand, for really nobody speaks one word in English. So I followed one man, a buyer, who wanted a tuna fish. He inspected the fish with a little torch and a hook. Touched the meat. Knocked on the skin. Pinched in the bit that was cut open.
I tried to understand why he finally bought his fish.
Followed the fish to the shop, which was on another part of the market.
Saw how the fish got cleaned and cut up, ready to sell.
